Tributes have been paid to a much-loved Isle of Wight man who died following a serious crash near Godshill at the weekend.
Emergency services were called shortly after 8pm on Saturday (3 January) to reports of a single-vehicle collision at the junction of Whitwell Road and Roud Road.
The vehicle involved was a silver Citroen Picasso. Sadly, the driver – a man in his 40s – was pronounced dead at the scene.
He has since been named locally as Ventnor Rugby Club stalwart Tristan Price, with the club leading heartfelt tributes to him.
In an emotional statement, the club said:
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Tristan Price passed away last night.
"Tristan was far more than just a player at Ventnor RFC.
"With 29 years at the club, he was a constant presence, a familiar face, and a true club man in every sense.
"His commitment, character and unmistakable personality will forever be part of Ventnor RFC.
"Our thoughts are with Tristan’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
"We send our love, strength and deepest condolences at this incredibly difficult time.
"Rest easy, Tristan. You will always be one of us.”
Tristan was also well known across the Island for his work as a doorman in Newport, where he was regarded as friendly, approachable and someone who always had time for people.
Many have described him as “one in a million” and say he will be missed deeply by the community.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision and are appealing for information.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dash-cam footage from the area around the time, is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference 44260003701.
