Investigation Launched After Gyrocopter Flips Over At Bembridge Airport

An aviation investigation has been launched after a gyrocopter overturned during a landing at Bembridge Airport, leaving the pilot with only minor injuries.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has been informed of the incident, which happened shortly after 12.10pm today (Wednesday) at the airport on Sandown Road.

A large emergency response was triggered after the aircraft came to rest upside down on the runway.

Witnesses described hearing a loud bang before looking towards the airfield and seeing the gyrocopter overturned.

It is understood the aircraft had completed its landing before an apparent issue involving the rotor system caused it to flip onto its roof.

Police officers, who were returning from an unrelated incident nearby, became aware of the accident at around 12.15pm while close to the Propeller Inn.

They attended alongside firefighters and other emergency service personnel.

Fortunately, the pilot was able to get out of the aircraft and suffered only minor injuries.

The AAIB is responsible for investigating civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents across the UK to establish what happened and identify any lessons that could improve aviation safety.
