Islanders are being warned to prepare for periods of heavy rain which could bring flooding and transport disruption across parts of southern England from Monday afternoon through to Tuesday morning.

The unsettled weather is expected to bring outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, before clearing to heavy showers later on Tuesday.

With ground already saturated, there is an increased risk of flooding in some areas.

The Met Office says rainfall totals of 20 to 30 millimetres are likely in many places, with higher totals possible on elevated ground.

Strong south-easterly winds may also add to difficult conditions.

Possible impacts include flooding of homes and businesses, delays or cancellations to bus and train services, and difficult driving conditions due to surface water and spray.

Some roads could be closed, and there is a risk that a small number of communities may be temporarily cut off.

Power cuts and disruption to other services are also possible.

People are being advised to check whether their property is at risk of flooding and to consider preparing a flood plan and emergency kit if needed.

Drivers are urged to check road conditions before travelling, while public transport users should keep an eye on the latest bus and train updates.

Residents are also encouraged to prepare for the possibility of power cuts by having torches, spare batteries and mobile phone power packs ready.

Weather warnings can change quickly, and the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the latest forecasts and local warnings as conditions develop.
