A heated exchange broke out between the chair of the Isle of Wight Council and a fellow councillor during a full council meeting earlier this week (Monday 16th March).
Tensions flared during a debate on proposals to assess council-owned sites — including former school land and the old driving test centre — for potential social rent housing.
A disagreement over procedure saw voices raised between council chair Ian Dore and independent councillor Peter Spink.
Cllr Spink raised a point of order during the discussion, prompting Cllr Dore to challenge him on the specific procedural rule being referenced.
When Cllr Spink said he was unable to cite the exact rule, Cllr Dore responded by urging councillors to move to a vote, adding:
“We’re not having a ding-dong over this.”
The exchange became increasingly tense, with both councillors speaking over each other as the disagreement continued.
At one stage, Cllr Dore warned against prolonging the dispute, asking Cllr Spink to “knock it off” and reiterating that the meeting should proceed.
Independent Socialist councillor Geoff Brodie later criticised the situation, describing it as a “farce”.
Shortly after the altercation, Cllr Dore adjourned the meeting, citing that he was feeling unwell.
The session resumed around 10 minutes later, but after the agenda item was concluded, Cllr Dore left the meeting, with vice-chair Vanessa Churchman taking over proceedings.
Speaking afterwards, Cllr Dore said he had not been feeling well and admitted that, in hindsight, he should not have attempted to chair the meeting.
A recording of the meeting has been published online.
