Ground investigations are set to get underway in Ventnor this summer as work continues on plans for a major coastal defence scheme designed to protect the town's coastline from erosion for decades to come.

The Environment Agency, working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council, will begin a programme of surveys to help shape the detailed design of a proposed 3.6km refurbishment of Ventnor's coastal defences.

The multi-million-pound scheme is intended to safeguard the seafront for the next 60 years, with construction currently expected to begin in 2030.

The first phase of the investigations, due to start next week, will involve non-intrusive surveys along the seafront and surrounding areas.

Specialist teams will use scanning and mapping equipment to assess ground conditions and existing infrastructure without causing significant disruption.

A second phase of work will follow later this year, with engineers carrying out more detailed investigations, including drilling boreholes and digging trial trenches on the beach to better understand the area's geology and assess the condition of the existing sea defences.

Some temporary access restrictions or localised closures may be required while the work is carried out, although project partners say disruption will be kept to a minimum and residents will be given advance notice where possible.

Nick Gray, Area Flood and Coastal Risk Manager at the Environment Agency, said:

"We are delighted to be continuing our work with Isle of Wight Council on this important project for Ventnor. These investigations are a vital milestone in developing a long-term solution to help protect the coastline from erosion while refurbishing this much-loved seafront for future generations."

Natasha Dix, the Isle of Wight Council's Service Director for Waste, Environment and Planning, added:

"This investment is about securing Ventnor's seafront for the long term – not just protecting but sustaining it as a place for the community and visitors alike.
"As asset owner and long-term steward, the council is focused on ensuring this scheme supports the town's character, resilience and continued use as a valued public space, backed by strong evidence and partnership working with the Environment Agency."

The proposed scheme forms part of wider efforts to improve the resilience of Ventnor's coastline, helping to protect homes, businesses, infrastructure and one of the Island's most popular seafront destinations.

Further updates are expected as the design and planning process progresses.
