Two new homes are set to be created in the heart of Newport, after plans to convert empty offices on Quay Street were approved.
Isle of Wight Council has given the go-ahead for developer Peter Groves of Niton Developments to turn numbers 15 and 16 — once home to accountancy firm A.H. Cross and Co. — back into houses.
The three-bedroom properties will require minimal work, as the buildings were originally constructed as townhouses before being used as offices for several decades.
A planning statement said the location, within Newport’s historic town centre, was “very sustainable,” being within walking distance of shops, services, and car parks where residents can apply for permits.
Council planners agreed, adding that the return to residential use would not harm the vitality of the town centre or the character of the conservation area.
The approval comes with three conditions to ensure compliance with planning policy and protect the area’s historic architecture.
