Around 75 young people from 1st Godshill Scouts have built bird boxes to support wildlife on the Isle of Wight.

The project was inspired by the Greening Campaign’s Spaces for Nature initiative, which encourages communities to create more habitats for wildlife.

Using sustainable, heat-treated pallet wood, the Scouts built the boxes with help from Scout leaders, parents, volunteers and Brighstone Men in Sheds. The materials cost just £45, which the group funded itself.

The activity also gave young people the chance to learn about conservation and biodiversity, with the bird boxes providing new nesting opportunities in gardens and green spaces.

Scout Leader Mary Kershaw said the project showed what young people could achieve with extra adult support, encouraging more volunteers to get involved.

The group is now developing a case study to help other Scout groups across the Island replicate the project, alongside a bird-themed activity sheet.
