Further Investigations Underway For Ventnor Coastal Defence Scheme

A second phase of investigations into Ventnor's coastline is due to begin next week as plans for a new coastal defence scheme progress.

The Environment Agency and Isle of Wight Council will start ground surveys along Ventnor seafront from the week beginning 14 September.

The work is expected to take between three and six weeks, with all investigations due to be completed by the end of November.

Boreholes will be drilled along the seafront to collect ground samples and check for any hidden voids beneath the surface, while trial pits will also be carried out on the foreshore.

The surveys follow investigations earlier this summer, which found significant amounts of sediment and debris in parts of the drainage network.

Specialist marine habitat surveys are also taking place offshore, using underwater video equipment to identify environmentally sensitive areas and help reduce the impact of any future construction work.

Some temporary access restrictions will be needed along parts of the seafront and Bonchurch Cliffs Promenade.

Businesses, cafés and other seafront facilities will remain open.

Weekday daytime restrictions are currently planned for part of Bonchurch Cliffs Promenade between late September and November, with the route expected to remain open during evenings and weekends where possible.

The project team will also hold drop-in sessions at its compound near Eastern Esplanade car park from Tuesday 29 September.

Residents, businesses and visitors can speak to the team every Tuesday and Thursday between 10am and 2pm.

The Environment Agency says the investigations will provide evidence to help develop options to reduce coastal erosion risks and create a more resilient future for Ventnor.
