The Environment Agency has issued a number of flood warnings and flood alerts across the Isle of Wight following heavy rainfall.
Carisbrooke And Hunny Hill – Lukely Brook
A flood warning is in force for Carisbrooke and Hunny Hill on the Lukely Brook, where flooding is expected today (Thursday).
Around 25mm of rain has fallen, with flooding from 7pm yesterday (February 18).
High river levels are likely to affect property at the bottom of Castle Street, while the Aquatics Centre at Vicarage Walk near Foxes Road is also expected to flood.
Water levels are forecast to be very high at Caesars Road and Old Westminster Lane, with the river potentially bursting its banks, leading to flooding of roads and parked cars.
The Environment Agency says river levels and flood risk should begin to reduce later today.
Teams are checking rivers for blockages and residents are urged to activate any flood protection products they may have.
Eastern Yar
A flood alert has been updated for the Eastern Yar and its tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.
Flooding is possible today after around 45mm of rain fell in the last 24 hours.
High river levels may lead to flooding of low-lying land, roads, cycle tracks and footpaths close to the river.
At Langbridge and Alverstone, the river is expected to be close to bank full. Flooding could affect Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road, while ditches around Fort Holiday Park may struggle to drain while river levels remain high.
Garden flooding at Nicholas Close is also possible.
At Sandown, the river will continue to rise throughout today.
Although only small amounts of rain are forecast from Friday (20 February) onwards, river levels will remain high and impacts are expected to continue for at least the next 48 hours.
The Environment Agency says it is checking rivers for blockages and operating the Bembridge sluices.
Residents, particularly in Alverstone, are advised to activate any flood protection products they may have.
Simeon Street Recreation Ground, Ryde – Monktonmead Brook
A flood alert is in force for Simeon Street Recreation Ground in Ryde, with flooding possible along Monktonmead Brook at Rink Road, Marymead Close, West Hill Road, Simeon Street and The Strand.
Around 32mm of rain fell on Wednesday, and high river levels on Thursday may lead to further flooding.
Marymead Close and the recreation ground are currently affected.
Drop boards are in place at the recreation ground, meaning water is being contained within the site to help protect properties at West Hill Road and around The Strand.
There may be further showers overnight, and river levels are expected to remain high throughout Thursday.
Crews are clearing blockages from debris screens at Marymead Close and have installed drop boards at the recreation ground.
People are being urged to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, including the recreation ground area, which is acting as a flood storage area.
Blackwater And Newport – River Medina
A flood warning is also in force for Blackwater and Newport on the River Medina.
Following 30mm of rainfall, flooding is expected from 23:30 on 18 February.
Areas likely to be affected include near Mill Farm, the Blackwater Mill buildings, property at Sandy Lane in Blackwater, and riverside property at St George’s Way.
River levels and flood risk are forecast to reduce by midday.
The Environment Agency says it is continuing to check rivers for blockages.
Whitwell, Wroxall, Horringford, Langbridge And Alverstone – Eastern Yar
A separate flood warning remains in place for Whitwell, Wroxall, Horringford, Langbridge and Alverstone along the Eastern Yar.
After 35mm of rain fell over the last 24 hours, flooding is expected today.
Impacts are expected to include flooding of roads, a small number of properties in Alverstone and Langbridge, restricted access to Horringford, Golf Links Road and footpaths, and garden flooding at Whitwell High Street.
Only limited further rainfall is forecast over the next five days, but minor impacts may persist.
River levels and flood risk are expected to begin reducing by 20 February.
Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow advice issued by the Environment Agency.
