Visitors heading to Osborne House this Sunday are being promised a sweet surprise as the former royal residence marks what would have been Queen Victoria’s 207th birthday.
To celebrate the occasion on Sunday 24 May, the first 207 people through the gates at Osborne House will receive a free slice of Victoria sponge cake.
While a 207th birthday may not be a milestone anniversary in the traditional sense, organisers say Queen Victoria’s birthdays hold particular significance at Osborne.
From 1846 until the death of Prince Albert in 1861, the royal couple spent almost every birthday at their beloved Isle of Wight home, making the celebrations an important part of life there.
Staff at Osborne hope the gesture will recreate some of the joy and excitement Queen Victoria herself experienced during her birthdays at the estate.
Entries from the monarch’s journals reveal how much she looked forward to the day.
Writing on her birthday in 1852, Queen Victoria said:
"It is always a delightful moment going into the room where my presents are arranged, and I still have the same feeling I had as a child."
Birthday celebrations at Osborne traditionally began with a band playing beneath the Queen’s window, before family members gathered in the Horn Room where gifts, flowers and decorations were displayed.
Many of the presents she received over the years are still on display at Osborne today.
The cake being handed out on Sunday is particularly fitting too. The Victoria sponge – a classic sponge cake layered with raspberry jam and topped with sugar – is widely believed to have been one of Queen Victoria’s favourite treats.
Victoria Stone, Osborne Site Manager, said:
"Too often when we talk about historical anniversaries we focus on the big numbers – 100, 250 or 500.
"But Osborne was very much the home of both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s birthdays, and we want to celebrate that.
"We are always looking for ways to bring history to life and by surprising those first 207 visitors with a slice of birthday cake, we hope to bring some of the joy Victoria and Albert felt, having a day full of treats in such a beautiful, decadent setting."
Visitors receiving one of the vouchers on arrival can collect their cake before exploring Osborne’s grounds, gardens, hidden cottage and beach.
