Free Entry To Newport Heritage Attractions This September

Two of Newport's historic attractions will be opening their doors for free this month as part of the annual Heritage Open Days celebrations.

The Isle of Wight Heritage Service is inviting residents and visitors to explore the Museum of Island History and Newport Roman Villa across two special events in September.

The first takes place at the Museum of Island History, inside Newport's historic Guildhall, on Saturday 12 September from 10am until 1pm.

The museum tells the story of the Isle of Wight from prehistoric times through to the modern day, with a range of exhibits available to explore.

There will also be other Heritage Day activities taking place around Newport town centre.

One of the highlights will be an immersive theatrical walking tour exploring the life and work of poet Charlotte Mew.

Created by StoneCrabs Theatre, the experience begins at 11am at the Yellowfin Propeller opposite Quay Arts, before taking participants around Newport and bringing Mew's story to life through performance.

The walk finishes at the Museum of Island History with a special presentation and visit to the museum.

Entry to the museum is free and no booking is required. The Charlotte Mew walking tour costs £10, with tickets needing to be booked in advance.

Rachel Tait, museum curator, said:

"Heritage Open Days gives people a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Island's fascinating history and heritage completely free of charge.

"Whether you're discovering the Museum of Island History for the first time or stepping into the story of Charlotte Mew through this unique theatrical experience, there's something for everyone to enjoy."

The following Saturday, 19 September, attention turns to Newport Roman Villa in Cypress Road.

The site will be open from 10am to 2pm, giving visitors the chance to see the remains of a 3rd-century Roman farmhouse dating back more than 1,700 years.

The villa was discovered 100 years ago in 1926 and includes a preserved Roman bath suite, hypocaust heating system and Roman-style garden.

Visitors can explore the site at their own pace, while free guided tours will also be available at 10.30am, 11.15am, midday and 12.45pm.

Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, chair of the council's economy, regeneration, transport and infrastructure committee, said:

"These free events are a fantastic way for people of all ages to discover the stories that have shaped the Isle of Wight.

"From the treasures held within our Museum of Island History to the remarkable remains at Newport Roman Villa, Heritage Open Days showcases the importance of preserving and celebrating our unique heritage."

Heritage Open Days is England's largest community-led celebration of history and culture, bringing together volunteers and organisations each September to showcase local heritage, traditions and stories.
