From gladiators and emperors to Roman roads and mysterious inscriptions, this week's brain teasers take us back to one of history's most fascinating civilisations.
We've got two easier riddles, two medium challenges and one tricky puzzle for anyone who thinks they could have survived a day in ancient Rome.

đź§ 1) The Roman Road (Easy)
A Roman soldier is travelling along a perfectly straight road.
He walks 10 miles north, then 10 miles east, then 10 miles south.
When he stops, he discovers he is exactly where he started.
How is this possible?
đź§ 2) The Emperor's Riddle (Easy)
A Roman emperor holds up an object and says:
"The more you take from me, the bigger I become."
His guards immediately know the answer.
What is the object?
đź§© 3) The Gladiator's Choice (Medium)
A gladiator is offered three doors after winning a contest.
Door I leads to freedom.
Door II leads to the arena.
Door III leads to a dangerous forest.
Above the doors are three inscriptions:
Door I: "Freedom is behind Door II."
Door II: "The forest is behind Door III."
Door III: "The first inscription is false."
The gladiator knows that exactly one inscription is true.
Which door should he choose?

A merchant in ancient Rome has a collection of coins.
He tells a customer:
"I have exactly 10 coins. Together they are worth 30 denarii."
The coins are made up of two different denominations:
1-denarius coins
5-denarius coins
How many of each does he have?

A Roman commander needs to send a secret message to another officer.
He writes:
XXII – IX – III – XX – XV – XVIII
Beneath it, he writes:
"The alphabet holds the key."
The receiving officer knows that:
A = 1
B = 2
C = 3
…and so on.
What does the message say?

1) The Roman Road
The soldier is standing at the North Pole.
If he starts at the North Pole and walks 10 miles south, then 10 miles east, and then 10 miles north, he can return to his starting point depending on the exact route.
But there's an even more interesting twist: there are also locations near the South Pole where this works because walking east can take him around a circle whose circumference is exactly 10 miles (or a fraction of it).
So the answer isn't necessarily one location.
Answer: Near one of the poles.
2) The Emperor's Riddle
The answer is a hole.
The more you take away from a hole, the larger it becomes.
It's a classic riddle, but imagining an emperor presenting it to his guards gives it a Roman twist!
Answer: A hole.
3) The Gladiator's Choice
Let's examine the statements.
If Door I leads to freedom:
Door I says freedom is behind Door II → False
Door II says forest is behind Door III → False
Door III says the first inscription is false → True
Exactly one statement is true.
Therefore the conditions are satisfied.
Answer: Door I.
4) The Roman Merchant
This one is a little trickier than it first appears.
If all 10 coins were 1 denarius, they would be worth 10 denarii.
Every time we replace a 1-denarius coin with a 5-denarius coin, the total increases by 4.
To get from 10 to 30, we need an increase of 20.
20 Ă· 4 = 5.
Therefore:
5 Ă— 1-denarius coins
5 Ă— 5-denarius coins
5 + 5 = 10 coins.
And:
5 + 25 = 30 denarii.
Answer: Five 1-denarius coins and five 5-denarius coins.
5) Convert each number into its corresponding letter:
XXII = 22 = V
IX = 9 = I
III = 3 = C
XX = 20 = T
XV = 15 = O
XVIII = 18 = R
The message reads:
V I C T O R
So the secret message is:
🏆 VICTOR
The Latin word victor means winner or conqueror — a fitting message for a Roman commander.
The trick is that the numbers look like Roman numerals, but they're actually being used simply to represent numbers which can then be converted into letters.
Answer: VICTOR.
