The Isle of Wight’s Community Diagnostic Centre at St Mary’s Hospital is set to be extended, with building work now underway to improve diagnostic care for patients.

The expansion follows a successful £6.2 million funding bid and will see the creation of a dedicated, state-of-the-art breast care facility within the centre.

From this autumn, islanders with suspected breast cancer or symptoms of breast abnormalities will benefit from having diagnostic tests and consultant appointments provided in one location.

The new centre will deliver comprehensive breast care for both symptomatic and screening patients.

It has been designed using feedback from staff and patients, with the aim of providing a more coordinated and supportive experience for patients and their loved ones.

As part of the work, breast care services will be relocated from the south of the hospital to the Community Diagnostic Centre in the North Hospital.

The expanded centre is expected to open in November 2026.

Health leaders say the move will make a meaningful difference to people attending appointments for suspected breast cancer, helping to improve comfort, efficiency and overall patient experience.

The development forms part of the Trust’s wider commitment to improving access to diagnostic services for islanders.
