Pupils from Broadlea Primary School in Lake have helped mark the start of a major play park improvement project while also celebrating success in a special reading initiative.
Children joined representatives from Lake Parish Council to launch the renovation of the Manor Road Play Park, which is being funded by the council as part of wider community investment in the area.
The visit also provided an opportunity to recognise the winners of a book bag design competition held as part of the National Year of Reading campaign.
All pupils at the school were invited to create designs for the book bags, with sisters Lacey Rose and Kiyah chosen as the winning designers.
The pair were presented with boxes of chocolates by Lake Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Paul Brading.
Headteacher Mrs Torrance praised the ongoing partnership between the school, parish council and wider community.
She said:
"Working with the support of the Parish Council and the local community, children at the school have been able to replenish the flower beds at the Railway Station.
"We have received additional sets of books to support group and class reading lessons, and book bags have been made available to all of our children.
"We are very much looking forward to a new and improved after-school play park for the children to enjoy."
Councillor Brading, who attended Broadlea himself as a pupil, said it was encouraging to see young people playing an active role in community projects.
He said:
"As someone that went to this school 50 years ago, it is heartening to see pupils getting involved in community projects such as Manor Road, and the Parish Council is committed to supporting initiatives that benefit the youth and community of the Parish."
The Manor Road Play Park improvements form part of the wider Bay Place Plan project, which is being delivered in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council and local community groups.
The programme also supports a range of community initiatives across the Bay area, including warm spaces, Men in Sheds groups and other local services.
