Black Friday kicks off on 28 November, with UK shoppers expected to spend around £3.9 billion.
While the sales offer big discounts on tech, fashion, and more, the Isle of Wight Council is urging residents to think about the environmental impact of their purchases.
Natasha Dix, the council’s Service Director for Waste, Environment and Planning, said:
“We can all play a part in becoming more conscious consumers.
"Ask yourself: do I really need this? Can I buy it in-store to cut down on emissions?”
Experts recommend simple steps to shop sustainably:
Prioritise items you truly need.
Choose quality over quantity for longer-lasting products.
Group deliveries or opt for slower shipping to reduce transport emissions.
Consider second-hand or pre-owned items.
Check whether products and packaging can be recycled.
Proper disposal of packaging is also key:
Cardboard: Flatten and remove tape or polystyrene before recycling.
Bubble wrap/air pillows: Not recyclable — put in general waste after deflating.
Polystyrene/sticky tape: Not recyclable — dispose of in general waste or take to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.
By making thoughtful choices and recycling carefully, Islanders can enjoy Black Friday deals while reducing their environmental footprint.
