The Environment Agency has issued a bathing warning for Gurnard, Shanklin and Bembridge following a water pollution incident.
People are being advised not to swim or bathe in or around the affected areas until further notice.
Anyone who comes into contact with contaminated water is advised to wash thoroughly with soap and water. Hand sanitiser may not kill all viruses that can cause illness.
Children and animals should also be kept out of the water.
Updates are available through the Isle of Wight Council and Southern Water's River and Sea Watch service.
Anyone needing further advice can contact the council's Environmental Health team on 823000.
Isle of Wight Radio has approached the IW Council for a statement.
