An internationally acclaimed pianist with family ties to the Isle of Wight is set to perform a special fundraising concert in aid of church repairs in Havenstreet.
Thomas Luke, described as a trailblazer by Steinway & Sons, has performed in concert halls around the world, including in Xiamen in China, Leipzig in Germany and Fort Worth in Texas.
His musical journey began at just four years old, encouraged by his grandfather, the late Colin Leal, who was a well-known resident of Havenstreet.
Thomas first came to national attention after winning the Keyboard Category of BBC Young Musician in 2020 and has since built a successful career as a concert performer.
In 2024, he launched Many Pianos – a series of layered arrangements for four or more pianos – and earlier this year released his debut album, See Me Now.
The album received praise from international online music magazine Interlude, which described it as “an impressive debut that leaves one wanting to hear more from this confident and imaginative musician”.
The upcoming concert is dedicated to Thomas’ grandfather and will feature pieces from See Me Now alongside other piano repertoire. All proceeds will go towards repairs at St Peter’s Church in Havenstreet.
Speaking ahead of the event, Thomas said his grandfather had played a major role in supporting his musical ambitions.
“My Granddad was an enthusiastic musician who encouraged me throughout my early years to pursue my dreams of becoming an accomplished performer,” he said.
“During his life, he was a well-known figure around the village, where my Grandma still lives.
"My family's long association with Havenstreet village means I am very fond of the community and am excited to help raise funds for St Peter’s Church.”
Sally Exell, Chair of St Peter’s Events Committee, said the community was delighted to welcome Thomas back to perform.
“We are so excited to host Thomas’s concert and so grateful to him for giving up his time to help fundraise,” she said.
“We knew Thomas as a young boy and are proud to see his Grandfather’s love of music shine through Thomas’s amazing talent.”
The concert will take place at All Saints’ Church on Sunday 12th April, with doors opening at 14:00.
