A major police operation at a Sandown petrol station was brought to a peaceful conclusion on Sunday evening after officers successfully negotiated with a man at the centre of a lengthy stand-off.

Emergency services were called to the Esso filling station on Avenue Road shortly before 7pm following reports of a man in possession of a weapon on the forecourt.

Armed officers attended the scene and established a cordon while specialist negotiators engaged with the individual, who was reportedly threatening to pour petrol over himself.

As a precaution, staff inside the adjoining Co-op store secured themselves within the building while police worked to safely resolve the situation.

Following a period of negotiation, officers were able to persuade the man to surrender peacefully.

He was subsequently arrested and a weapon was recovered from the scene.

The man, who was also found to have sustained a neck injury, received treatment from paramedics before being taken to St Mary's Hospital for further assessment.

The incident resulted in a significant emergency services presence in the area, but the petrol station and Co-op store have since reopened to the public.
