A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with heavy and persistent downpours expected on Thursday (January 15).

The warning is in force from 9am until 10pm, with forecasters warning that rain falling on already saturated ground could lead to surface water flooding in places.

The Met Office says an area of low pressure will move northeast across England during the day, bringing prolonged and at times heavy rain before clearing later in the evening.

Rainfall totals of 20 to 30 millimetres are expected across the Island, with the potential for 40 to 50 millimetres in isolated areas, particularly if heavier bursts fall in a short space of time.

What to expect

  • Flooding of a small number of homes and businesses is possible

  • Spray and standing water on roads could lead to longer journey times

  • Bus and ferry connections may be affected by difficult travel conditions

Residents are being urged to take extra care when travelling and to allow more time for journeys, particularly during the morning and evening periods.

The warning was last updated at 8.37am on Wednesday (January 14).
