Members of the public rushed to help a man who collapsed in the street in Ryde yesterday (Saturday) lunchtime, prompting a major emergency service response.

The incident happened at around 12:30PM on Swanmore Road, where bystanders spotted the man lying on the pavement and immediately alerted emergency services.

CPR was started at the scene before paramedics arrived.

Ambulance crews from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, alongside a critical care paramedic and an operational commander, worked to stabilise the patient with support from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary officers.

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was also deployed from Southampton, landing at Pell Lane Recreation Ground in Binstead before medics made their way to the scene.

Swanmore Road was temporarily closed between Milligan Road and Radcliffe Avenue while emergency services dealt with the incident.

By shortly after 14:00, the air ambulance had returned to Southampton without needing to transport the patient, and the road was reopened.
