Tributes are being paid following the death of martial artist and Hollywood star Chuck Norris, who has died aged 86.

His family confirmed he passed away on Thursday morning, just days after celebrating his birthday.

In a statement, they said he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

Norris rose to global fame as both a champion martial artist and a film and television icon, with a career spanning more than five decades.

Before Hollywood, he was a highly accomplished fighter – a multiple-time world karate champion who later founded his own martial arts system.

His big screen breakthrough came alongside Bruce Lee in 1972’s Way of the Dragon, featuring one of cinema’s most famous fight scenes.

He went on to star in a string of action films including Missing in Action and The Delta Force, before becoming a household name as the lead in Walker, Texas Ranger, which ran throughout the 1990s.

In later years, Norris found a new generation of fans online, becoming a viral sensation thanks to the “Chuck Norris facts” – jokes exaggerating his toughness and invincibility.

He embraced the trend, often showing his humour and appreciation for supporters.

Just days before his death, he marked his 86th birthday with a typically upbeat message, telling fans:

“I don’t age, I level up,” while thanking them for their continued support.

Tributes have been flooding in from around the world. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described him as a “great friend of Israel”, while author Stephen King shared some of his favourite Chuck Norris jokes in tribute.

Fans have also been remembering him as “more than an action star”, praising his influence on martial arts, film and popular culture.

Away from the screen, Norris was known for his strong personal beliefs and charity work, as well as promoting fitness and martial arts through schools and organisations he founded.

His family described him as a “devoted husband, loving father and grandfather”, adding that he inspired millions through his discipline, faith and kindness.

They have asked for privacy as they mourn his loss.
