1 Year Old Child Dies Following Serious Incident In Newport

Police on the Isle of Wight have confirmed that a 1 year old child has died following a serious incident in Newport's Dairy Crest Drive.

An investigation was launched after officers were notified of the child's condition by staff at St Mary's Hospital on Friday morning.

A 27 year old woman and a 31 year old man were subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

The child was flown to a mainland hospital due to the severity of their injuries - but despite the efforts of clinicians, passed away this afternoon (Sunday).

Both of those arrested have been bailed until November 1st as investigations continue.

A statement from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said:

“This is an incredibly sad situation and will undoubtedly be felt throughout the community.

“We are continuing to conduct thorough enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident and how the child became injured, and we respectfully urge members of the public to refrain from engaging in speculation online.
