We have started an exclusive HALL OF HEROES to celebrate all the amazing people and good deeds which are being done!

For the last two weeks on the Breakfast Show, we’ve been mentioning some of the incredible people who have been making a huge difference.

We know how important key workers are - including, everyone in health and social care, education and childcare, key public services, local and national Government, supermarket staff, utilities, communication and finance, public safety, security and transport.

Shout outs and nominations have been flying into us!

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust ICU (Intensive Care Unit) team decided to add some fun to their day during their break!

Good evening everyone - I have just recieved this update from Acting Inspector Sam Warne who is the duty inspector this evening: At 2000hrs this evening representatives from our Response and Patrol, Neighbourhood Policing and Joint Operations Unit were present to congratulate staff at St Mary’s Hospital on the fantastic job they are doing in extremely difficult circumstances. We presented them with a welfare pack of gifts to keep them going - all at a safe distance. The Fisherman's cottage in Shanklin have been making food for vulnerable Islanders.

 

The Yarbridge Inn have been making and delivering hundreds of meals to emergency workers and vulnerable Islanders.

Yates Brewery has delivered thousands of bottles of orange juice to St Mary's Hospital.

CNC Coatings Ltd has donated all of its left over face masks to the hospital.

 

RJC Autos in Sandown is offering free winter vehicle checks to all NHS staff and key workers - and also fixed a car after a nurse became stranded.

Shout out to the carers at Accomplish, D.Care and all of the other Island care homes who are doing everything they can to support and reassure vulnerable Islanders.

Shout to all the staff at Easthill Care Home for the Deaf in Ryde, who are keeping everyone's spirits up!

CNC Coatings LTD in Sandown has donated all its left over face masks, while RJC Autos has been offering free vehicle checks for NHS workers. They even came to the rescue of a nurse to fix her car.

 

Shout to Parita Patel from Delish Indian. She's made hot food for staff at St Mary's and delivered it to the hospital. She's thanked Island Foods for supplying chicken and Roots and Fruits for supplying mushrooms and peppers. Parita is hoping Island businesses can keep supplying food so she can continue making the meals.

Abbie has been in touch and wants to shout out to Cherry Trees Residential Home in Cowes, while Tracie Green says a big thank you and hello to Autumn House in Sandown.

 

Michael Brooke is nominating two groups - the guys and girls who take our rubbish away every week and the team from Island Roads who are keeping our streets clean.

 

Mason Parker wants to shout out for all the water and waste water staff at Southern Water on the Isle of Wight.

 

Sarah Elliott wants to give a big heroes shout out to all my colleagues at Housing Services at the Isle of Wight Council who are working hard to support those who are homeless on the Island. Also to The Pop Up Soup Kitchen who are busy prepping food and getting parcels out there for those in need!

 

A big shout out to Barrow Boys in Ryde who are working around the clock to provide fresh fruit and vegetables for their customers!

 

From Donna - Lillie who is 8 wanted me to share with you that she's been staying home and working really hard (lots of hours) to make rainbow pictures for our windows.

Sandown Carnival Association has presented (from a distance) a donation of £750 to The Isle Of Wight FoodBank.

The financial boost will help support those most in need in the Sandown Bay area during the current coronavirus crisis.

Can you give a shout out for Board Cafe who are running free online quizzes for children for educational purposes and adults to keep them happy whilst in lock down. At the same time they have a just giving page to raise money for the NHS. More here.

 

Jess Bishop and Josh Hammond initially handed out the vanilla-iced treats to residents at Orchard House Care Home in Newport. They then received an influx of orders Islandwide.

The pair have now baked and iced 480 vanilla cupcakes in a week, with future deliveries planned already – including for Island paramedics. More here..

 

All the milkmen and women carrying out deliveries deserve a shout out!

 

Brownriggs in Godshill are doing all they can to produce fresh goods on the Island. They are also delivering and have arranged a special collection service.

 

From Tina Attrill - Can you give a clap for all the Reablement Team at Community Outreach Services, the team are all key workers,the support workers going into people home to support their needs, to all the staff in the office, and those working from home to keep this vital service going.

 

Arty shakes in Shanklin have been delivering pottery kits with paint, brushes, and some goodies to children across the Island. They are now started sending free packs out to families in need who can’t afford the packs for their children.

 

Bev has started Healing for the IOW on Facebook. It's encouraging people to sit in quiet refection at 5pm every day for 15 minutes to send healing, kindness, positivity and warm thoughts to all those affected by Covid 19 on our beautiful Island and beyond.

 

The youngsters at Theatretrain have put a song together on the Isle of Wight to help raise spirits!

Dean Ray started a Facebook page asking people to donate money they would usually spend on their first round in the pub to charity. Thousands has been raised for Mountbatten for its coronavirus appeal. More here.

House of Nomad has been making complimentary meals for the NHS this week and hopes to keep doing it this weekend.

 

Seven year old Sienna Watts wanted to raise money for the doctors and nurses that are helping people with coronavirus. She has recently discovered a love for running. She is aiming to clock up a half marathon (21km) over about 10runs (approx 2km per run). The aim is to complete the 10 runs by 16th May. You can donate here.

I have been really enjoying listening to you during our lockdown during which I had a week of annual leave. I am a keyworker, I am the Cemeteries and Burials Officer at the Isle of Wight Crematorium, so am still at work.

 

I wanted to nominate all of my colleagues at the Crematorium for a mention in your heroes section. We're all carrying on as normal to ensure families can say their final goodbyes to their loved ones in the best way we can whilst observing the restrictions currently in place due to Covid-19. 

 

I also wanted to nominate all of the Island's funeral directors who are doing their utmost to assist families in arranging funerals.

Island man, Tom Roberts, has been offering his services free of charge to help elderly and vulnerable people maintain their gardens. 

 

DJ Hunt fruit and veg wholesaler has been continuing its vital work on the Island helping people get their essential supplies.

 

From Sarah: Grace's Bakery has created a whole website and online shop to help serve customers on the Island. Customers as far away as the US and New Zealand have been buying gifts for their friends and family on the Island. They have also been supplying St Mary's Hospital with food.

 

Tracie Green wants to put Little Ladybirds Nursery into the Hall of Heroes for all the amazing work they are doing!

 

Electrical Solution IOW put non essential works on hold to carry out essential works only at St Mary's Hospital! It has a lot of works carried out over the last few weeks to convert non clinical areas to Covid 19. Electrical Solution have been a part of all these works with Data Solution IOW have been working alongside.

Ventnor Botanic Garden is offering NHS staff a free day pass to enjoy the gardens.

 

George Jenkins Transport showed their incredible support by decorating a trailer and organising a ride out to support NHS Staff and key workers.
