Wednesday 15th May, 7pm
Dr Paul Bingham will be exploring a Neanderthal handaxe which was recovered, besides an elephant tooth, at Pan Pit, Newport by Frederick Poole (a former curator of the museum). This stone handaxe was one of the objects featured in the book ‘100 Treasures and Curiosities from Carisbrooke Castle Museum’ published to mark the museums 125th anniversary in 2023. The talk will include an opportunity to handle handaxes and hear about Paul’s MA research into these ancient tools (he had to get ethical approval as although handaxes have no rights, he was studying how archaeology students were recording these objects.) Recent advances in technology have revolutionised this area including Photogrammetry and Big Data.

Tickets cost £5 and advance booking is essential.
Please note: Gates open from 6.30-6.50pm with the talk starting at 7pm.
