Isle Of Wight And Southampton Legends To Clash In Fundraising Football Match

Football fans on the Isle of Wight will be treated to an electrifying clash of the titans, as the Island's finest prepare to take on Southampton Legends in a fundraising contest.

Scheduled to kick off at 7pm on May 17, at Westwood Park in Cowes, this event promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Newport Football Club and Cowes Sports announced their collaboration in hosting the event, which aims to bring together football enthusiasts from across the region for a night of entertainment and goodwill while simultaneously raising funds for both clubs.

Saints' greatest ever player, the man known as 'Le God', Matthew Le Tissier, is one of the headline names who will strut his stuff during the battle of the south-coast.

Here's the legendary number 7 confirming his place in the matchday squad:

The Isle of Wight Legends, comprising well-known island footballers from over the past 30 years, are set to showcase their skills on the pitch against the revered Southampton Legends.

Fans can expect a display of talent, flair, and nostalgia as these players relive their glory days and create new memories for supporters young and old.

"We are thrilled to be hosting this special event, bringing together football legends from the Isle of Wight and Southampton for a memorable match," said Lee Bray, spokesperson for the organising committee.

"Not only will fans have the opportunity to witness some former top footballing talent, but they'll also be supporting the future of Newport Football Club and Cowes Sports."

Here's Portsmouth legend Lee Bradbury, who was born and grew up on the Island:

John Davies, Chairman of Newport Football Club, expressed his enthusiasm, stating:

"This match is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent and passion for football on the Isle of Wight while also ensuring the continued success of Newport Football Club.

"We are proud to be part of such a meaningful event that brings our community together."

Along with Le Tissier, confirmed Southampton Legends include Matt Oakley, James Beattie and Glen Cockrill, with more star players to be added in the coming weeks.

The Isle of Wight team will be represented by esteemed former Island players: Andy Butler, Ashley Wright, Jamie & Duncan O'Rourke, Pete Wheeler, Joe McCormack, John Holmes, and Darren Powell.

Additionally, two well-known former professionals, the afore mentioned Lee Bradbury and Gary Rowett, will join the team; both attended Cowes High.

Bradbury went on to play for Portsmouth, Manchester City, and AFC Bournemouth.

Rowett enjoyed a professional career spanning over 14 years, competing in both the Premier League and Championship. He played for renowned clubs such as Everton, Derby, and Birmingham City.

The match is expected to draw a large crowd of spectators, including avid football fans, families, and supporters.

Alongside the action-packed game, attendees can enjoy various entertainment offerings, including halftime performances, food stalls, and opportunities to meet footballing icons.
