Police Continue To Try To Tackle Anti-Social Behaviour In Newport

Police say they are continuing to tackle anti-social behaviour in Newport.

Officers have given an insight into some of the incidents reported in and around the town centre yesterday (Wednesday).

Posting on the Isle of Wight Police Facebook page, police said:

  • A group of girls set the Cineworld fire alarm off twice. For no reason. This also evacuates the gym, Burger King etc
  • We’ve seen youths in Balaclavas this evening ready for a pre-arranged fight.
  • We’ve dealt with several nasty assaults in Victoria Recreation Ground and NIneacres field the past few days.
  • We’ve been called six times to youths throwing rocks off the roof of the multi-storey car park onto pedestrians below.
  • We’ve also been called to youths climbing the roofs of buildings in Scarrots Lane and kicking chairs around the car park.

What are police doing to manage it?

Isle of Wight Police continued:

"We currently have officers on overtime and extra patrols to assist with this. We have officers from other teams carrying out foot patrols in the town.

"We have a Section 35 dispersal in place and will be robustly dealing with any individuals we believe are causing ASB (anti-social behaviour) and directing them under the dispersal to leave the town immediately. If they fail to do so, they are removed to their home address and will be dealt with through the criminal justice process. We have dispersed five individuals so far this evening (Weds).

"We are carrying out home visits with these youths, we have had staff from the Youth offending team out with us and continue to work with them to manage this problem. We will also arrest if the grounds exist.

"The town isn’t a playground for the holidays, so please make sure you know where your children are."
