Orchard Gifts Bear Fruit As Newport Residents Squirrel Around New Furry Friends

A series of kind donations are aiding Newport's Orchard House in its mission to improve the care home's outside space.

Items gifted to the home by nearby resident, Rose Best, include a bird table and a beautiful stone bird bath which residents have seen being used by squirrels.

In addition to Rose's kind offerings, the home has purchased two red squirrel feeders from the Squirrel Trust which residents have painted to protect it from the weather.

Residents were stunned to one day see a black squirrel running along the veranda — after some 'Googling', they discovered that some baby red squirrels are born black before their colour comes in.

General Manager, Kim Fleming, said:

“There has been much excitement as the local squirrels have been spotted taking nuts from our feeders, which we bought from the Squirrel Trust, and are specially designed for Red Squirrels.”

Resident, Lillian, added:

“We saw two out there the other day chasing each other around as well as eating the nuts, although some were taken off and buried!”
