Isle Of Wight Misses Out On City Status Bid

Eight new cities have been created as part of the celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee taking place in two weeks - but the Isle of Wight has missed out.

A bid was put forward for Newport to be made a city.

But today (Friday), it's been revealed that the Island won't have a capital city.

The Cabinet Office announced the capital of the Falkland Islands is among the eight places to win coveted city status, alongside Bangor in Northern Ireland, Douglas on the Crown Dependency of the Isle of Man, Colchester, Doncaster, and Milton Keynes.

Dunfermline in Scotland and Wrexham in Wales have also won the honour.

The new city list:

• Stanley, capital of the Falkland Islands
• Douglas, Isle of Man
• Bangor, Northern Ireland
• Colchester
• Doncaster
• Milton Keynes
• Dunfermline, Scotland
• Wrexham, Wales
