Isle Of Wight Could Lead The Way In National Program For Coronavirus App Trials

The Isle of Wight could lead the way for a national study by trialling the Government's coronavirus test and trace strategy app, according to The Telegraph newspaper. The study is drawn up by the NHS and is expected to use human tracing teams, a smartphone app and on-demand swab testing. The trial would take place whilst we remain in lockdown. If successful on the Island the program could be rolled out across the country. The decision is yet to be fully given the go-ahead by Government. Meanwhile, the MP for the Isle of Wight Bob Seely will be on air on the Breakfast Show at 8.40am tomorrow (Wednesday) to give an update. Commenting on the Contact-tracing and Testing Story in the Telegraph, Bob Seely MP said: “I welcome the proposal, although clearly we are waiting final decisions. I will work with the NHS on the Island and the Council. “In conversations with Matt Hancock and Health Ministers recently and over the past few years, I have made the case for the Island piloting schemes, especially in ideas around telemedicine and use of drones - to drive improvements in patient care. “If this goes ahead, the pilot for testing and tracing will make Islanders safer by ensuring extra layers of protection. There is no question of ‘just’ lifting the lockdown. However, the elements for planning lockdown easing - as well as long-term Covid suppression - can be put together on the Island prior to rolling out nationally.” “The lockdown is not a trade-off between lives v. the economy; it is between saving life now versus saving life later. We need to save life now, and this pilot scheme will make Islanders safer - but we also need to preserve life in future. The reality is that cancers are at risk of going undetected and heart conditions untreated. Failed business and bankruptcies will lead to stress and possibly a rise in suicides. Young people are being denied education and life chances are being undermined. “We need to find a way out of the current situation. We need to start planning. I am delighted Government is doing that and I am delighted that this pilot will help make the Island as well as the UK safer." More follows...
