Islanders Urged To Arrive On Time For Household Waste And Recycling

Residents are being urged not to arrive too early for bookings at the Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs) to prevent queues building up on the main roads.

For the second weekend running, the sites — especially at Lynnbottom — have seen queuing which has caused further delays down the road. This has made it both unsafe for other road users and added to delays in accessing the sites.

Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, Cabinet member for waste management, said:

“We know this time of year is busy as people take advantage of the spring weather and particularly the Easter bank holiday to tackle a spring clean.

“This also coincides with the tourist season beginning in earnest on the Island so our roads are also becoming busier.

"I would urge residents to stick to the times they have booked and to not arrive too early, please.”

Natasha Dix, service director for waste, environment and planning, added:

“Please stick to the time you have booked. If you don’t have a booking, you won’t be able to enter the site. You can check if traffic is busy in the area beforehand by visiting www.roadworks.org and plan your journey so you arrive on time.

“We advise arriving no sooner than 10 minutes before your allotted time.

"The tips are also quieter from 3pm onwards so you have the option of booking at a quieter time if you wish, especially since the introduction of same day booking last autumn.”

TOP TIPS

  • Think before you throw as some items you are disposing of could go to a charity shop or be reused.
  • Sort your items before you go, so your items are ready in your boot in like for like piles ready to pick up and place in the right skips (eg bundle all wood together, place all clothing in one pile, to deposit on arrival quickly).
  • Did you know the council offers a free reuse collection service for white goods and furniture in a good condition? Visit www.iow.gov.uk/waste
  • There is also a paid for bulky waste collection service for un-reusable large white goods and furniture.
  • Visit www.roadworks.org to check out traffic in the area before you leave.

Book before you go

Please make sure you book your trip to the HWRCs before you go. If you do not have a booking, you will not be able to enter. You can book at www.iow.gov.uk/waste
