Extra Funding Secures Future Of Isle Of Wight Law Centre

The Isle of Wight Law Centre is to remain open, less than a month after it was revealed the service would shut.

Extra funding has been agreed by the Isle of Wight Council to enable the centre to continue providing vital support services at a time many Islanders are struggling against the rising cost of living.

Based in Newport, the independent charity offers free legal advice to those with housing, welfare benefits, debt and employment problems.

Earlier last month, it was revealed the service would have to close at the end of August due to problems securing additional funding.

Its future had be uncertain for a number of years. In 2019, the Isle of Wight Council didn't renew its contract to provide legal services. It meant the centre had to seek alternative funding, which ensured its immediate future.

An agreement has now been reached which will see the Island's law centre remain open.

The council said it continues to progress the work around re-commissioning of community housing support from April 1, 2023 in-line with the law which governs its purchasing processes.
