Cowes Primary School Pupils Race To Formula One National Success

Two teams of pupils from Gurnard Primary School in Cowes raced to success at the Lenovo F1 in Schools Primary Class UK National Finals.

Formula 1 is at the heart of the initiative, with students across the globe forming teams in miniature to design, make, test and race an F1 in Schools car.

The Finals took place at Autosport International, a motorsport exhibition held at Birmingham's NEC.

Vortex (below) — made up of 10-year-old team members Cassius, Emily, Elsie, Fallon and Barnaby — won the Research and Development Award.

They were also nominated for the Team Identity and Verbal Presentation Awards.

It was sister team, Venomous Vipers (below), with team members Sammy, 10, Dylan, 11, Harry, 11 and Ralph, 10, who won the Verbal Presentation Award and were nominated for the Portfolio Award.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools, said:

“The pupils have an impressive level of knowledge which goes far beyond the attainments reached within the classroom.

"Alongside this, we’ve seen a fantastic enthusiasm from the teams, with all the students being passionate about their work and enjoying competing at the National Finals.”

The primary school version of the prestigious F1 in Schools initiative is becoming increasingly popular with both school children and teachers.

An innovative STEM educational initiative, it challenges primary school students to design, build and race a miniature paper racing car.

The National Finals took place with the assistance of a host of partners and supporters.
