Coastguard Called After Three Attempt St Helens Fort Walk Despite Warnings

Three people were forced to alert coastguard teams after they were cut off by the tide while attempting St Helens Fort Walk this evening (Saturday).

It comes just days after emergency services urged Islanders not to try the walk.

As Isle of Wight Radio previously reported, it was feared doing so would prompt needless call-outs for rescue teams, which are already stretched because of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the warnings did not stop some today.

According to HM Coastguard, six people were out on the walk.

Three of them are said to have started out across the causeway to St Helens Fort, before getting cut off by the tide.

A coastguard spokesperson said:

”They called the Coastguard who sent the Bembridge and Ventnor coastguard rescue teams and Bembridge Inshore Lifeboat.

“However the 3 did manage to make it back to shore unaided where they were met by a Coastguard Rescue Team.”
