Trailblazing Boomtown Fair Putting Steps In Place For Net Zero Music Festival Future

Organisers of one of the UK's leading summer gatherings are aiming to revolutionise the future of music festivals across the country.

Boomtown Fair, which takes place at the Matterley Bowl near Winchester, has launched its sustainability campaign for next month's event which unfolds between August 10 and 14.

The move sees Boomtown become one of the first UK festivals to sign a Green Deal, alongside a commitment to being Net Zero by 2025.

A spokesperson for the event said:

"Boomtown’s ongoing priority is to protect the environment from the impact of an event of its size, to raise awareness and inspire ongoing behavioural change among those who attend.

"With our partnership with Tree Sisters, we have so far planted 100,000 trees around the world from Madagascar to Nepal.

"We continue to plant trees, contributing to one of the most powerful solutions for climate change."

Other steps being taken towards Boomtown's Net Zero blueprint include:

  • Switching fuel to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), which will reduce emissions from fuel consumption by 90%.

  • Continued elimination of the sale of single-use plastic bottles at the festival, preventing 225,000 plastic bottles a year.

  • Ensuring ALL food 'serveware' at the festival is compostable.

  • A brand new main stage, Origin, built using real plants and sustainable materials - many recycled from previous main stage.

In addition, the festival will usher in daily mobile pop-up sound systems via the Eco-Warriors group, where attendees can get involved in the big Boomtown tidy.

The Eco-Warriors - who visit various festivals to motivate people to keep the grounds tidy - will be handing out free 2023 festival tickets and merchandise to the cleanest camps and those doing their best to keep the South Downs National Park clean and free from litter.

Further information about Boomtown and how to attend the festival is available online.
