Work To Protect Island Bridges And Roads Nears Completion

A programme of work to protect bridges, retaining walls and roads across the Isle of Wight is nearing completion.

Island Roads has been carrying out preventative maintenance to tackle a problem known as scour, where flowing water gradually erodes soil, gravel and other material around bridge foundations and walls.

If left untreated, the erosion can weaken structures and, in serious cases, lead to collapse.

Work has taken place at several locations, including Muggleton Bridge near Brighstone, Gunville Bridge, Kingates Lane Bridge near Whitwell and St George's Way Bridge in Newport.

Repairs have also been carried out to the wall above Lukley Brook in Carisbrooke, while the final scheme is due to begin alongside Brookside Road in Freshwater on August 21 and last for around two weeks.

The work has included maintaining bridge supports and retaining walls, as well as protecting riverbanks from erosion.

Island Roads says environmentally sensitive methods have been used, with ecological specialists involved throughout the programme.

The sites are all designated as 'main rivers', meaning the work has been carried out under permits or exemptions from the Environment Agency.

Wildlife including fish, eels, ducks and moorhens has been spotted during the work, with construction methods adapted where necessary to minimise any impact.

Island Roads has also aimed to reduce disruption for residents and road users, with temporary traffic lights generally restricted to off-peak periods.

Pedestrian and cycling access has been maintained at Muggleton Bridge, helping to keep the popular round-the-Island cycle route open.

The programme has also provided practical experience for civil engineering student Scott Beasley, who has been working with Island Roads' structures team as part of a university placement.

Island Roads says the work forms part of its wider programme of inspections and preventative maintenance to keep the Island's bridges and highway infrastructure safe and resilient.
