Isle Of Wight Moves Closer To Restrictions On Disposable Barbecues And Sky Lanterns

The Isle of Wight has moved a step closer to restrictions on disposable barbecues, sky lanterns and balloon releases at high-risk sites.

The Environment and Community Protection Committee has voted to develop a Public Spaces Protection Order covering selected council-owned areas where there is a greater risk of wildfire or environmental damage.

It follows a public consultation which found significant support for restrictions, particularly on sky lanterns and balloon releases.

The council had previously been advised that there was not currently enough funding, evidence or enforcement capacity to introduce a PSPO across all council-owned land.

Instead, officers recommended a targeted approach focusing on areas at increased risk, including key parks and amenity beaches.

Possible measures include seasonal public awareness campaigns, improved signage and working with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, town and parish councils, landowners, retailers, campsites and tourism businesses.

The committee's approved motion says the development of a PSPO for selected high-risk locations should be considered as part of its priorities and the council's budget-setting process.

A Public Spaces Protection Order is a council power designed to tackle particular problems in public spaces which have a negative impact on the local community's quality of life.
