New Parking Charges Proposed Across Isle Of Wight

New parking charges could be introduced at a number of locations across the Isle of Wight, with council officers warning of a possible backlash from residents and businesses.

The proposals include charging for parking in places such as Union Street in Ryde, Sandown High Street, Regent Street in Shanklin, Fort Victoria Car Park in Yarmouth and the new Royal Exchange Car Park in Newport.

Other areas listed include Ventnor High Street and several streets in Newport, as well as car parks at Wheelers Bay and Eastcliff in Ventnor, St Martin's Road in Wroxall and Warnes Lane in Brighstone.

Parking charges are also being proposed at Godshill Car Park, Bouldnor Viewpoint in Yarmouth, St Helens Green, Gurnard seafront and Hope Road in Shanklin.

The council report warns that business communities could launch campaigns against the plans, while concerns could also be raised about the impact on economically deprived communities.

It says St Helens Parish Council could argue that charging at St Helens Green Car Park is unlawful, while Shalfleet Parish Council is expected to call for work to improve the view at the car park.

Businesses operating at Fort Victoria are also expected to object to the proposals.

The plans are subject to consultation and will be considered by the council's economy, regeneration, transport and infrastructure committee next Tuesday, October 6th.

If supported, they would then go forward for consideration as part of the council's budget-setting process.
