The streets of Ryde will burst into colour on Saturday 5th July as the 2025 Isle of Wight Mardi Gras takes to the town with a celebration of folk traditions, community spirit, and island heritage.

Organised by New Carnival, this year’s theme, “Our Folktastic Isle – The Wheel of the Year,” highlights the Isle of Wight’s seasonal customs and folklore. Twenty-four schools and community groups will bring stories to life through handmade costumes, performances, and parade entries inspired by everything from Shrovetide doughnuts to the 1865 Ryde Jack in the Green.

The day kicks off at 11:00 AM with a Mini Mardi Gras at Simeon Recreation Ground, offering free family activities and workshops. The main parade sets off at 3:00 PM, weaving through Ryde town centre with key viewing times between 3:30 and 4:00 PM. The route includes The Strand, Union Street, and the Esplanade, returning to the recreation ground.

Spectators can enjoy early performances from Morris dancing group Mr Bakers Dozen at 2:30 PM, as well as pre-parade acts including Viva Carnival Club and All Stars Dance Stars.

A designated Quiet Zone will be available near the boating lake for those preferring a calmer space.

The event forms part of the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival and is supported by Arts Council England, Ryde Town Council, Wightlink, and Diamond Adventures. Travel discounts for mainland visitors are available via the IW Biosphere website.

The Mardi Gras is a free event open to all.
