The Isle of Wight is set for prime-time exposure this week as Paul Merton visits the Island in a new Channel 4 series.

In Paul Merton: Driving Amazing Trains, the comedian arrives aboard Wightlink’s FastCat service into Ryde Pier Head, before embarking on one of the UK’s most unusual rail journeys – stepping straight from train to ferry.

During his visit, Paul follows in the footsteps of his father, who worked as a Tube driver, by riding in the cab of former London Underground Northern line trains now operating on the Island’s railway.

He also gets hands-on with the Island’s heritage, taking control of a steam train, spending time on a working farm and uncovering the Isle of Wight’s lesser-known role in preparations for the D-Day.

Passengers travelling on the FastCat were even treated to a surprise, with Paul making a live announcement from the bridge alongside the vessel’s captain during the crossing.

The episode highlights the Isle of Wight as a unique destination just a short journey across the Solent.

It airs on Channel 4 this Thursday (9 April) from 8pm to 9pm.
