Lanesend Primary School Given Two-Star Food Hygiene Rating

A Cowes primary school has been given a two-star food hygiene rating, meaning “improvement is necessary”.

Lanesend Primary School on Love Lane was inspected by the Isle of Wight Council’s environmental health team on June 19.

Inspectors found an “aged” kitchen with several areas in need of repair.

A letter sent to the school said the kitchen needed to be “thoroughly” cleaned.

Findings included dust and debris stuck to a skylight, which was falling onto equipment and an area of the kitchen below.

Inspectors also found peeling paint near the kitchen’s wash hand basin, dust and cobwebs underneath a sink and a tiled windowsill which was gathering dirt.

The council said some wall coverings were unsuitable for an area where food is prepared, treated or processed, warning they could potentially contaminate food, surfaces and equipment.

The affected areas of wall must be repaired before being redecorated.

The inspection also found the kitchen floor needed repairing because its current covering could trap dirt and food particles and make effective cleaning more difficult.

Cracked and peeling paint was also found on parts of the ceiling.

The council warned that paint and plaster particles could fall onto surfaces and equipment, potentially leading to food contamination.

It said the ceiling must be repaired and repainted to provide a surface which prevents dirt from accumulating.

The school is due to have a new kitchen fitted over the summer.
