Sandown's Bay CE School Achieves Prestigious UNICEF Accreditation

Sandown's Bay CE School has achieved a Bronze RRSA: Rights Committed School accreditation.

The "Bronze: Rights Committed" is the first stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award.

The school, across both the primary and secondary sites, will now work towards silver and gold.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of school life in the UK.

UNICEF looks for schools to make progress towards embedding the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into their ethos and curriculum.

The award recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond.

Together, young people and the school community learn about children’s rights, putting them into practice every day.

The award is not just about what children do but also, importantly, what adults do.

In Rights Respecting Schools, children’s rights are promoted and realised; adults and children work towards this goal together.

UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

Duncan Mills, Executive Headteacher, said:

“This is the first step in our Rights Respecting Schools journey.

"We are now working towards silver and gold accreditation through our continued work on wellbeing, participation, and embedding the United Nations Rights of the Child.

"The award helps us to put children’s rights at the centre of everything we do and empowers our pupils to take action on a wide range of issues such as climate change, mental health and bullying.”
