Cross Solent ferry Victoria of Wight has been assisting the passengers of a RIB stuck in lobster pots in the vicinity of Ryde Pier this evening (Saturday).

Isle of Wight Radio listeners report that the ferry - which usually travels between Fishbourne and Portsmouth Harbour - was seen to divert from its course to assist a pleasure craft off Ryde pier.

The vessel had become caught in underwater lobster pots.

Photos show Victoria of Wight launching one of her rescue boats to attend to those onboard the RIB.

Victoria of Wight’s AIS nap shows her diverting from her usual route.

It’s understood that an adult and an unconfirmed number of children were transferred to Bembridge Coastguard and Rescue team who were standing by on Ryde Pier.

Isle of Wight Radio has contacted HM Coastguard and Wightlink for a comment.

UPDATED 21:19:

Ferry operator Wightlink have released a statement about its participation in the rescue.

Keith Greenfield, Chief Executive of Wightlink, said:

“I am very relieved that all the passengers on the distressed RIB have been recovered uninjured and I’d like to give thanks to Captain Sam Mitchell and the crew of Victoria of Wight for their professionalism and quick reactions.

”The safety of lives is always Wightlink’s top priority and our crews are well trained to deal with emergency situations like this.”

We’re awaiting a statement from HM Coastguard.
