West Wight Timebank Calls For Contributions To New Box Scheme

Timebank volunteers

Islanders are being urged to consider contributing any way they can to a variety of different boxes that are being distributed by volunteers at the West Wight Timebank.

The community group are also on the hunt for a church hall or inside space in Freshwater or Totland - so they don’t have to operate out of a garage or garden during the cold winter months.

The West Wight Timebank has more than 100 members who share their skills and gifts with one other -  for every hour you give you earn “time credits” so there is no exchange of money.

More than 10,000 credits have been exchanged in the five years it has been operating. But members can save, spend or give away credits if they wish.

Because of coronavirus, all the volunteer projects were cancelled and the team have now created the ‘box scheme’ instead.

The different boxes include:

  • The growing box - filled with compost, tomatoes, herbs and strawberries - 61 have been distributed
  • The wellbeing box - filled with homemade jam, silk cards, a short story and plants - 74 have been distributed
  • The Bulb box - filled with flowers, bulbs and herbs - 10 have been distributed
  • Food bags - food donated by Brighstone Stores - 110 have been distributed to families
  • Family drop and swap bags - filled with donated clothing, toys, jigsaws and Christmas items

Founder of the West Wight Timebank Sally Gater told Isle of Wight Radio:

“The box scheme was designed to allow members to still contribute to share their skills and gifts with each other to support the community, but also something to do if they are self-isolating themselves

“We would really love to have people contributing to the box scheme particularly and we are hoping that we would be able to have some space in one of the church halls in Freshwater or Totland offered to us because we are currently doing it in the garage and garden and it is getting quite cold.

“We are just delighted to be able to support community members in the West Wight to build a stronger more resilient community really, especially at this very different time for everybody.”

As Christmas is coming up, three members of the Timebank are also creating beautiful cards which Islanders are being encouraged to buy. All the funds go towards running the box scheme.
