Week Of Platinum Jubilee Celebrations For Sandown Students

Pupils at Sandown's The Bay CE School have been preparing for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a week of celebrations.

On Monday, Year 3 pupils took part in a Creaturama Workshop. They had to use junk to make a Jubilee Carriage and design the inside of it.

Staff said the ideas they came up with were "brilliant" and ranged from jet-propelled carriages to carriages which had a private jacuzzi!

On Tuesday, some of The Bay pupils were chosen by Richard Priest OBE DL as winners for the school Design a Mug/Flag competition.

Amelia Unsworth, Sienna Jarman, Oliver Middlehurst, Rosie Butchers and Skye Hood were accompanied by Mrs Lawrence, Head of School and Mrs Payne, Office Manager, alongside some of the secondary pupils; Corey Mead, Charlotte Jenkins, Oliver Eglese and Blaize Shilton to present their flag and mugs to the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

On Thursday, year groups spent time creating some royal artwork and exploring a specific decade in the Queen's reign. The whole school looked fantastic in their red, white and blue clothes. Our Reception - Year 4 pupils spent the afternoon playing some traditional party games and joined together to sing their Jubilee song.

Year 5 and 6 pupils visited the secondary site to take part in The Queen’s Jubilee Inter House Cup. All pupils took part in rounders and football Inter House tournaments led by the secondary school Year 10 sports leaders.

After all of the events from both Year 5 and 6 were completed, the results were:

  • The Jubilee Rounders Cup was won by Red House.
  • The Jubilee Football Cup was won by Green House.

At lunchtime, all of the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils toasted the Queen, making a giant 70 shape, as well as planting two Oak trees in commemoration of the Queen’s Jubilee.

These were planted by our Eco Champions and will each live and grow with a plaque on both school sites.

Nina Lawrence, Head of School said

"It was wonderful to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with our pupils.

"They were excited to learn about the Queen’s reign and to discover what the Platinum Jubilee is all about. It was fantastic to finish off the week with traditional party games and to gather together to sing our jubilee song."
