WATCH: Isle Of Wight Councillors' Flipping Good Virtual Pancake Challenge

Photo from last year's event. This year's was held virtually.

Two Isle of Wight councillors have been fighting it out to find this year's most prolific pancake tosser.

Mayor of Ryde, Cllr Michael Lilley and Cllr Wayne Whittle went head to head once again in their annual challenge.

The contest, which normally takes place at Ryde Foodbank, was held virtually this year because of the pandemic.

It was set-up to raise awareness and funds for Ryde food projects. Competitors had to flip as many 'pancakes' as possible in one minute.

So who battered who, and who was left with egg on their face?

Reigning champion Cllr Wayne Whittle was once again triumphant.

He defeated Cllr Lilley by 125 flips to 51.

This year, Ryde youngsters are being urged to take part to see if they can beat the winning total.

Michael Lilley said:

“Every pancake day since 2017, Cllr Wayne Whittle and I, have flipped pancakes at Ryde Foodbank to highlight the reality of food poverty in the town and raise money for Ryde Foodbank.

"We are working with Network Ryde to invite young people through their virtual youth club to beat Wayne and I’s record on the number of pancake flips in a minute with whoever beats our score will be the Ryde Pancake Challenge Youth Champion 2021.

"This is a fundraising event and all monies to be spent of food projects in Ryde.”

Speaking before the event, Wayne Whittle said:

"It’s that time of year again where we get to fundraise for our fantastic hard working Ryde food projects, guess I'll have to batter Michael once more to prove that I'm still the flipping champion and run the risk this time of getting KO'd by the Network Ryde gang. Bring it on!!”

All proceeds will be split between the following organisations:

Ryde Foodbank – which has continued to supply much needed food support to the community during the pandemic.

Aspire Ryde – which has been providing a free food stand, cooked meals and emergency food parcels.

Network Ryde – which has provided weekly cooking videos and support to young people over the past year.
