UPDATE: Vulnerable Woman Dies After Being Pulled From The Sea Near Castle Point

Several rescue teams were mobilised last night (May 1) following the disappearance of a high-risk Whippingham woman who disappeared earlier in the evening.

Police have confirmed that the woman in her 40s was pulled from the sea at around 12.20am near Castle Point and handed over to emergency services for medical assistance, however hospital staff were unable to save her.

She was found following the combined efforts of the Cowes RNLI Inshore Lifeboat, Coastguard rescue teams from Bembridge and Ventnor and the the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter from Bournemouth.

The fire service from East Cowes lent a hand by supplying its thermal imaging camera.

Searches were carried out over several hours in the Cowes area and the NPAS helicopter searched the coastal area between East Cowes and Fishbourne.

It was the largest multi-agency search in recent years.

Hampshire Constabulary told us in a statement:

“Officers, along with assistance from other emergency services had been searching the area for several hours yesterday evening following reports that a woman in her 40s had gone missing woman from East Cowes. She had been last seen about 4pm yesterday.

"A woman was pulled from the sea last night at around 12.20am today by Castle Point. She was taken to hospital but staff were unable to save her.

"It has since been confirmed that the woman in the sea was unfortunately the missing person. Her family have been made aware.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious."
