Ventnor Community Foodbank Marks One Year Since Volunteers Stepped In

Volunteers Steve, Barbara and June

Ventnor Community Foodbank is celebrating a year since it was taken over by volunteers.

Since July last year when it opened, it has fed 870 people – 463 adults and 407 children.

Volunteers say they're indebted to the Ventnor community, individuals, churches, businesses, community groups and the Town Council for supporting them.

This week, items needed include fruit juice, squash, tinned rice pudding, custard, sponge puddings, tinned spaghetti tinned soup and biscuits.

Volunteers are continuing to offer a collect at the door or delivery service.

Food can be dropped off at donation points:

  • The Co-op
  • Tesco
  • Carnaby Tea Rooms
  •  Wendy’s
  • Norris Stores, Niton

There is also a donation sack outside the Foodbank on a Tuesday and Thursday between 10-12.

Steve Northern, Foodbank Co-ordinator said:

‘We are aware of the looming crisis when the £20 per week uplift to universal credit ends in September forcing many, including some of our volunteers, back into poverty. £20 really makes a massive difference to so many.  We are also concerned at the uncertainty around free school meals during the summer holidays. The support from our community has never been so important.’
