Vectis Radio has scooped three awards at a ceremony celebrating the best of national community radio.
The community station, based in Newport, was awarded two golds and one silver at this year's ceremony in Coventry.
In a video played at the start of the awards, Nadine Dorries, Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, said:
“It’s so great to see such a huge variety of nominees, and you all thoroughly deserve your nominations.”
There was a gold in one of the prestigious categories, the Community Development Project of The Year, which went to the Vectis Radio 4PS Radio Training School.
Station Manager Ian Mac said:
“To finally get gold after gaining 2 bronze awards and a silver award in the previous 3 years was very emotional. To finally receive this award, on behalf of the youngsters involved, recognising the work we all do within our community, is off the chart. I am hoping this will generate more funds for the project.”
There was also a Silver Innovation award for Short Breaks in Lockdown, another 4PS project.
Kelvin Currie walked away with the first gold in the station's history, being awarded Sage Person Of The Year.
After receiving two silvers in the previous two ceremonies, Kelvin said:
“I am very proud and privileged to have been acknowledged by the community radio industry.”
Danielle Wharton, from the Isle of Wight Council's Children’s Services, said.
“Congratulations to you personally and to your team. This is fantastic news! It shows how hard you all worked through a really tough time to provide your activity remotely to ensure the young people had consistency in a time of such uncertainty.”
