Vandalism On The Rise At Newport's Public Toilets

Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) has reported an increase in vandalism in the town’s public toilets.

The damage — which they say has been occurring on an almost daily basis across Newport in recent weeks — has often led to the closure of facilities to allow repairs to take place.

Incidents include toilets being deliberately blocked, fires, electrical fittings damaged, graffiti, toilet seats removed and toilet paper dispensers kicked from the wall.

Cllr Matthew Price, Chair of the Assets & Facilities Committee of NCCC said:

“Again, the public toilets have been vandalised.

"We have tried our best to keep the public toilets open for as many hours as possible and at a great cost to local residents, it is so sad that a small minority think it is acceptable to vandalise the toilets."

"Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council took the toilets on after the Isle of Wight Council made the decision to close all the public toilets back in 2013 and NCCC has worked hard to move forward with projects to upgrade them.

"The vandalism we are currently seeing cannot continue and we are pleading with the individuals to stop and think how unacceptable this behaviour is.”

Police have been informed of the incidents and are now checking the facilities as part of their town patrols.
