'Unusual Scams' Targeting Isle of Wight Including Someone Who Lost Their Cat

Trading standards says some 'unusual scams' are targeting Islanders including preying on someone who had lost their pet cat.

An Isle of Wight resident who lost his cat and reported it on lost pet websites got a call from a man who told him that the cat had been found and checked over by a vet.

The scammer then asked for payment before he could collect the animal. It turned out to be a scam.

Islanders are also being warned about a new ‘vishing email’ that comes from Amazon or Paypal saying a large amount of money has been taken from your account.

The email appears to use official fonts and logos. There is also a message that reads:

"If you didn’t make this purchase, please call us."

Anyone tricked into dialling the contact details will then be put through to a real person on the other end of the phone. The person will be a scammer, who will try and steal as much information as possible.

Some scams have been targeting Island businesses such as people pretending to be from the High Court Enforcement and claims there is a CCJ against your company.

There have also been calls from companies that want you to advertise in their brochure. They quite often claim to be providing a service such as working to prevent crime and make the Island a safer place. These brochures very often don’t exist and your “advert” will go nowhere.
